About Arlaen
Arlaen is a language I began at age 13 and worked on through my teen years. I've recently come back to it with a deeper and more nuanced understanding, but there are still many words and features I'm proud of my younger self for creating. I had learned Quenya not too long before (shout out to Ardalambion) and Arlaen is heavily inspired by Quenya: highly inflected, with a complex case system. However, even at the beginning I was noticing that my language took on a personality of its own. Over the years that I've matured as a writer and a conlanger, both Arlael and Arlaen have moved away from being Tolkien/Elvish clones respectively, and become a unique expression of my own worldview and aesthetic values.
Set in the fantasy world of Arlael, Arlaen started as a common language for the community of humans and merfolk who live on the western shore of my main continent. (The language name means "sky-sea.") Since then I've made Arlaen a common language for most of my fantasy world, which has also taken on the name "Arlael." (Before, the name only referred to a specific region.)
In universe, Arlaen descended at least from Old Tathrewirian and Old Anwirin, as well as probably a mermish language. (I just realized I should consider Old/Proto Arlaen too, whatever that turns out to be.)
