Na! In today's lesson we are going to learn about the somehow complex Tihrkian kinships.
Mixymughagor (Consanguinity):
  • Grade 0: nhe (ego)
  • Grade 1: soma (parent) → ilaiket (father) and tuhnaket (mother); tsysarh (child) → xarh (son) and minny (daughter)
  • Grade 2: nhenhe (sibling) → nheujo (brother) and nhebats (sister); jai (grandparent) → nonvosaora (parental grandfather, father's father), moi (parental grandmother, father's mother), ghriai (maternal grandfather, mother's father) and xary (maternal grandmother, mother's father); poi (grandchild) → krijiai (grandson) and lenai (granddaughter)
  • Grade 3: mittiu (pibling) → tju (paternal uncle, father's brother), aija (paternal aunt, father's sister), djeva (maternal uncle, mother's brother) and jei (maternal aunt, mother's sister); surha (nibling) → jojos (nephew) and nohena (niece); syfjai (great-grandparent) → syfjaiujo (great-grandfather) and syfjaibats (great-grandmother); syfpoi (great-grandchild) → syfkrijiai (great-grandson) and syflenai (great-granddaughter)
  • Grade 4: krireyn (cousin) → kritt (male cousin) and ihlen (female cousin)
  • (Great-piblings, grand-nibling, first cousin once removed... are created with “sibling of...”, “child of...”, “cousin of...”)
  • (Great-great-grand[something] and successive kinships are made by adding syf- suffixes.)

  • Janvar (Affinity):
  • Grade 0: ader (husband) and arar (wife)
  • Grade 1: somavar (parent-in-law) → ilaiketvar (father-in-law) and tuhnaketvar (mother-in-law); tsysarhvar (child-in-law) → xarhvar (son-in-law) and minnyvar (daughter-in-law)
  • Grade 2: nhenhevar (sibling-in-law) → nheujovar (brother-in-law) and nhebatsvar (sister-in-law)
  • (Every other relative is made by adding the suffix -var, meaning “-in-law”.)

  • Finally, in terms of siblings, they are often counted in Tihrkian culture as first, second..., not as younger sibling or older sibling.
