About New Old Polish
NOTE: I'm back after a break and the lang is undergoing intense reform. A revolution even. I've learned a lot since and I won't feel comfortable expanding it until I update it. Most of the entries require corrections.
It's a loose adaptation of late XIII-early XVI-century Old Polish made to be usable in modern times and able to convey concepts unknown in its' time. It's extremely puristic and made to contain as little post-Proto-West-Slavic loanwords as possible, sometimes to the point of rejecting loanwords which were already established in Old Polish if there is a possibility of replacing it with a more Slavic equivalent. It also contains selectively resurrected forms and declensions which were already dying out or extinct at the time because I want it to be more consistent and ancient-like.
Some of the resurrected features of Old Polish include but are not limited to:
- lack of final devoicing. (New trait. Not yet implemented)
- phonemic distinction between long (á /ɑ:/, é /e:/, í /i:/, ó /o:/, u /u:/, ý /ɨ:/, ą /ɔ̃:/) and short vowels (a /ä/, e /ɛ/, o /ɔ/, u /u/, y /ɨ/, ę /æ̃/).
- half-long nasalised allophones of a /ä/, e /ɛ/ and o /ɔ/. (New trait. Not yet implemented)
- execution of "rz" as a voiced alveolar fricative trill /r̝/ contrasting with a plain alveolar trill "r" /r/, instead of the modern Polish /ʐ/.
- execution of "soft" sibilants (ś, ć, ź, dź) as palatalised alveolar (/sʲ/, /t͡sʲ/, /zʲ/, /d͡zʲ/) instead of modern Polish alveolo-palatal (/ɕ/, /t͡ɕ/, /ʑ/, /d͡ʑ/).
- execution of "l" as a palatalised alveolar lateral /lʲ/ instead of the modern Polish /l/ and "ł" as a velarised dental lateral /ɫ̪/ instead of the modern Polish /w/.
- consistent Lechitic ablaut ("jezioro - jezierze" instead of modern Polish "jezioro - jeziorze").
- reintroduction of the dual number.
- reintroduction of the aorist.
