[edit] [top]Phonetic inventory and phonotactics of Ancient Naastnaat (around 1900 years ago)

Nása language was the immediate predecessor to Ancient Naastnaat.

Available Nása syllable patterns were fairly restricted: V, CV, VN or CVN only, with V or VN patterns available only at the start of the word. VN and CVN syllables could only be followed by V or VN or by a homorganic stop onset (SV or SVN).

The change from Nása language to Ancient Naastnaat is considered to be when the Nás short and long 3 vowel system (e, o, a) changed to a 6 vowel system.

6 vowels: i, e, u, o, ɑ and ə; no vowel diphthongs.
3 places of articulation: bilabial, alveolar and velar.
Consonant types: voiced stop, unvoiced stop, voiced fricative, unvoiced fricative and nasal at each place.

With the advent of the schwa sound, some word-final loss of this vowel occurred, allowing the VC and CVC syllable patterns to exist.

Consonant clusters with stop and homorganic fricative (as codas) such as st, zd, ɣg, xk, pɸ, bβ were added as Ancient Naastnaat developed an interfix system to create compound words. (The scope of clusters in the interfix system would expand in scope later in Naastnaat's history.)

β became *w through fricative approximation when between two rounded vowels or when word-initial before a rounded vowel, except in the north-east coastal region. Interfixes using /w/ then became possible between a stop and a vowel or between two vowels.
