Species Human/humanoid
About Velmarin About 1800 years ago, a Sino-Roman expedition led to the joint colonization of a small volcanic archipelago in the South China Sea. Isolated from the rest of the Romantic world, and with heaps of influence from the Sinosphere (and a healthy dose of linguistic purism), the Velmarin language has since developed into a rather unique Latinate language (there is some debate as to whether the category “Romance” even applies) that trends both phonologically conservative and grammatically innovative.

Notable features include:
  • Retained long vowels and diphthongs
  • Pitch accent
  • Pro-drop
  • Reduced, but still extant, case system
  • Regularised four-conjugation verb system
  • Collapse of tenses into non-past and past
  • Loss of strict plural marking in nominals
  • Loss of strict gender agreement in nominals
  • Loss of strict person marking in verbs
