About Proto-Zaga
Protolang of the Zaga language family. Originating in the nomadic Zaga (Zak'i), who migrated from the highlands beyond the Morongite Mountains and settled in the Eastern Basin, rendering the native Mu'urgat peoples a minority. The most widely-spoken descendant, Saglupe, would mix with various other languages in the Port Majalaha area to form Eastern Tradetongue, otherwise known as Sakalune, now the predominant language in urban Thoch'nammon.
Almost all grammatical information is encoded via vowel and consonant mutation, suppletion or infixing.
The Zak'i had no writing prior to crossing the mountains, but adapted the Western Mu'urgat script for their language, which was ultimately derived from the Ćemeń script, which itself had its source in Sim Ren logographs. The only Zaga group who don't use writing derived from these glyphs are the Island Saka, who never migrated and independently invented a writing system in order to administer their growing empire west of the Morongites.
Makes heavy use of vowel and consonant mutation - words decline/conjugate according to different mutation patterns depending on their phonemes. The consonant paradigms words can fall into are Sharp (Ejectives and glottal stop), Loud (Voiced consonants), Clear (Voiceless consonants) and Rolling (j, w and r). The paradigm is determined by either the number of consonants (t'ok'ov is Sharp, t'ovov is Loud) or by the first consonant if there is no majority (t'obok and bot'ok are respectively Sharp and Loud). The vowel paradigms, determined the same way, are simply High (i, æ, e, y) and Low (ø, u, o, ə, ɑ).
