About Miadin
Miadin (/myadĩ/) is a language isolate with few obvious links to its surrounding neighbours, spoken on on the island of Miadi in the Mediterranean and several small islets comprising the Republic of Miadi by around 200,000 people (see map.) While some of the structures and vocabulary reflect those of its near neighbours in Greek and Turkish, no conclusive link has been made with any other Indo-European language. This is what makes the study of Miadin a worthwhile one, out of proportion to its influence or number of native speakers.
Miadin is today written in the Roman alphabet. A Greek-influenced alphabet was used previously, but usage seems to have been discontinued some time in the 16th century. Sporadic efforts by conservative linguists and politicians to revive the national script (tiqikon miadinika, or Miadin writing) have not been successful. The spelling and punctuation conventions in use today largely reflect the work of reformation undertaken in the 1960s. There are two main dialects, of which the variety used in the capital Pisirpe forms the basis for standard Miadin.
