About Mascarene
Bahasa Bênatula is a fictional Austronesian language native to the Mascarene Islands (). The three islands were settled during the same migrations of Austronesians that settled Madagascar. The proto-language that Bahasa Bênatula is based on therefor is Proto-Malay, because evidence suggests that Malagasy likely also evolved from Proto-Malay. Bahasa Bênatula is a relative of the other descendants of Proto-Malay, and so its morphological typology has similarities. As is typical of indigenous languages influenced by European colonization, there is French influence in the vocabulary.
