About Socorran
Socorran (a reo Motukohu, often simply a reo) is a Polynesian language spoken on Socorro Island of the Revillagigedo Islands in Mexico. A member of the Eastern-Polynesian language group, it is closely related to languages such as Hawai‘ian, Rapa Nui and Māori. The settler population of the island arrived around the fifteenth century, originating from Hawai‘i and the Marquesas Islands.
Socorran, being spoken on Socorro Island, is variously seen as forming a fifth point of a "Polynesian Pentagon," or being a Polynesian outlier language. It is frequently classified as a Marquesic language, placing alongside Hawai‘ian and the Marquesan dialects. Socorran does show some unique divergences and differences from the other Marquesic languages, possibly influenced by later settlers from Rapa Nui.
