About Ancient Almerian Ancient Almerian (Alm: Αλιμεραζ - Alimeraz) was a language spoken in the Kingdom of Almeria which covered part of northern Greece and parts of Albania and Montenegro from about 1,250 bc to about 350 bc. The kingdom was home to about five million people at its peak. Most spoke Almerian, which had a rich written history, but some ancient Caucasian languages were also spoke, and Greek. Near the end of the Almerian Kingdom, Greek started to become widespread and eventually took over. The remaining Almerian speakers broke off and began to speak languages such as Albanian, Georgian, and Slavonic. It is believed the language was completely extinct no later than 350bc, but many carvings and scrolls have been found detailing the language and the people who spoke it.

Today, the leading professor of Ancient Almerian, Prof. Helen West-Barnes of Vienna University's Language and Anthropology department has been head of the campaign for study into Almerian, and many places now teach the language in their classics classes. Many works have been translated into Almerian, including poetry, plays and Prof. West-Barnes herself translated the gospels of the New Testament into Almerian in 2001.
