The two alphabets maintain a largely one-to-one correspondence, with transcription between the two being a matter of mere replacement. The Greek alphabet had to be modified for use in Aurentine and was thus used during the colonial era as a means to transcribe messages which Aurentine speakers wanted to obfuscate, elevating the Greek script to a place of a national pride and cultural identity among Aurentines.
[top]Differences between the Hellenic and Aurentine Greek scripts
The Greek alphabet, representing sounds from a different Indo-European branch, had to be modified to fit the orthographic and phonological patterns of Aurentine.
- Xi and psi are omitted;
- Digamma, generally in the form of Latin “f”, is reintroduced to represent Latin “v”;
- Koppa, generally in the form of Latin “q”, is reintroduced to represent Latin “h”;
- The “ou” ligature is promoted to a full letter (named “nutte”, related to the English “knot”) representing Latin “u”;
- Upsilon represents its classical sibling “y”;
- Eta and omega are reinterpreted as Latin “ä” and “ö” respectively; and
- Iota and upsilon can take a diaeresis to represent Latin “j” and “w” respectively.
