1. Case and articles
?
?
Oskan has 4 cases: nominative, negative nominative, accusative, and ablative. Nouns are not inflected for case, but the articles are. There is no indefinite article in the nominative case, and indefinite articles in other cases are not inflected for number, but the definite articles are inflected for number (singular and plural) and noun class (animate and inanimate).Definite | Indefinite | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Singular | Plural | ||||
Animate | Inanimate | Animate | Inanimate | ||
Nominative | ma | fa | maz | faz | |
Negative nominative | pem | pef | pemzi | pefzi | pen |
Accusative | dum | duv | dumzi | duvzi | du |
Ablative | im | if | imzi | ifzi | ig |
Articles go before nouns. If the article ends with a vowel and the noun begins with a vowel, the vowel at the end of the article is deleted. e.g. fa espal -> f'espal
The nominative case is used for subjects, and the accusative case is used for direct objects. The ablative case is usually used for motion away from something. The negative nominative case is used for subjects in negative sentences.
