Kabundare has four animacy distinctions: Animate I, Animate II, Inanimate I, Inanimate II.

Animate I
This class includes humans almost exclusively, but can be used in reference to an animal considered to have some level of advanced cognition and social abilities or an animal that has a particular social role in their species such as an alpha wolf or a queen bee.

Animate II
This class includes all other animate things such as animals that are alive as well as things in nature that move such as the wind or running water.

Inanimate I
This class includes things that are inanimate that are resources, food, or tools. Abstract ideas are usually includes in this class but may be otherwise classed if they are regarding phenomena from other classes.

Inanimate II
This class includes all other inanimate things such as geographical features and benign phenomena and concepts that are considered rules of nature and universal immutable facts.
