CV(V)(C) - one syllable per word. Vowel combinations allowed: /ai ei ao/. These are bimoraic and may involve two tones. When both vowels have the same tone, it manifests as a long diphthong with the tone expressed across both morae, not two separately pronounced vowels; ⟨ái⟩ is /ái̭/ rather than /á.í/. Where only the first vowel is marked, assume the tone applies to both vowels - although vowel pairs can be rising-falling or falling-rising, they cannot be rising-neutral, neutral-falling, etc…
In compound words of more than one morpheme where a word ending in a nasal precedes a fricative or liquid, this is often realised as nasalisation of the vowel, e.g. yin cà - /jin çà/ - [jĩçà]. This can be shortened in informal writing with an apostrophe, especially with the plural marker ri, as in yón ri (“stars”) > yó’ri. ✎ Edit Article ✖ Delete Article
