Etymology
OE wesan & bēon. Adopted some forms from OE bēon. The subjunctive forms are rarely used, except in extra-formal writing (i.e royal decrees, parliamentary bills, etc). OE bēon also survived as the gnomic 'bie' (see other conjugations), which is exclusively used to talk about timeless truths in formal writing and in proverbs Notes
To be, exist, have a certain state. Also used to form the simple/perfect passive voice (be/have been), which indicates that the action occurred to the subject is not currently ongoing. For example, 'Ij am lost' means the same as English "I am lost", where the process of losing the subject has been completed. Compare 'Ij weurð lost', meaning "I am currently being lost" or "someone is in the process of losing me"
