About North Sea Seafarers' Dutch Seafarers' Dutch is a misnomer because it isn't actually Dutch. It is a mixed language developed from Latin and Ingvaeonic Germanic spoken by the Śentu Sortium, a seafaring (pirate) people that lived along the coast in what is now modern Netherlands and Germany from the early 5th century until the turn of the millennium. The language is now extinct, but a few words survived in some dialects Low German.
