About Old Endasti Shortly after the beginning of the world, millennia before writing really took foot, a small population of primitive hunter-gatherers struggled to survive in a grassland full of dangers at every turn. A grain spirit, taking interest in their unusual curiosity and bravery, decided to reveal himself to them and take them under his wing. He promised them security and abundance, more than they could possibly imagine; however, their new home was thousands of miles away. As a sign of good will, he taught them the fundamentals of agriculture. Eventually, he convinced 1/3 of the people to follow him.

The journey itself took several lifetimes, with groups splintering off at nearly every turn. But along the way, this grain spirit (now a full deity they named Daluon) closely watched and shaped their blossoming culture, teaching them architecture, advanced tool-making, ethics, and governance. He took especially close interest in their language, carefully molding it into a form of speech fit for a future empire.

When the descendants of those first brave pilgrims finally reached their promised land and planted their roots, the foundation stones of the first true civilization, their language had long since become unrecognizable to its original speakers. This language, as we would call it, was Old Endasti.

A descendant of Proto-Norro-Sunaic (by way of Archaic Endasti), this language is clearly in the midst of an awkward growth spurt. Inflectional irregularities run rampant, phonotactics are haphazard, and etymologies are obscured by huge semantic drift -- not to mention executive meddling from Daluon, which includes introducing hundreds of new words out of nowhere.

The settlers name themselves Astelu (sg. Astälon), literally "those who speak," and use the extensive knowledge gifted from Daluon to spread their way of life beyond their borders. During this process, Old Endasti eventually diverges into the languages that comprise the Endastine branch of the Norro-Sunaic languages.
