"Hello everyone and welcome to the Maryan Coptic language!"

Maryan Coptic (ⲧⲉⲙⲩⲧⲭⲏⲙⲉ, tr. temutkʰēme) is my personal take on "modernizing" the Coptic language, while also making sure I preserve the majority of its niches and grammar.

Here are some notable things about Maryan Coptic:

  • A modified Coptic alphabet is utilized as the standard script, unfortunately not all computers support the unicode to show the script properly.
  • The vocabulary is comprised of 85% Coptic (mostly Bohairic, some Sahidic), 12% Greek, 1% Semitic, and 2% Other.
  • Distinction between 2nd-person masculine and feminine singular, as is with most Semitic languages.
  • Distinction between unaspirated and aspirated voiceless stops (also [almost] no voiced stops).
  • Majuscule letters are used sparingly, only to mark proper nouns.
  • Agglutination to form more complex nouns and verbs.
  • Certain verbs (and nouns) containing consonantal roots can take on up to 4 states: Absolute (dictionary form / no linked object), Construct (links to a noun or verb), Pronominal (links to a pronoun), and Qualitative (expresses a state or quality rather than an action).

Syllable Structure(C)(C)V(V)(C)(C)
Stress informationVowels that can indicate a stress are called "strong" vowels. All long vowels in native Coptic orthography carry a stress: ⲏ, ⲓ, ⲟ, and ⲩ. Some short vowels also carry stress: ⲁ ⲟ. However, ⲓ, ⲩ, and ⲁ are unstressed if a multi-syllable word (usually two syllables) has a strong vowel on the ultima syllable: ⲧⲩⲃⲟ /tuˈβɔʔ/ (to purify), ⲁⲗⲓⲗ /aˈliːl/ (mouse), and ϯⲙⲁ /tiˈmaʔ/ (to allow).

Unfortunately, for loan words of non-Afroasiatic origin, stress has to be memorized based on their original language: ⲁⲅⲁⲡⲏ /aˈkape/ (love, from Greek αγάπη), ⲥⲧⲁⲩⲣⲟⲥ /stawˈɾɔs/ (cross, from Greek σταυρός), and ⲧⲩⲛⲇⲣⲁ /ˈtuntɾa/ (tundra, from Russian тундра)
