About Balak
V1.6 OF GRAMMAR DOC RELEASED: link
Balâçik yuşazamşar!
Balak is a Vaniuan language mainly spoken in Balakia, where it is the official language. It has been considerably influenced by the Amaian language and its various stages throughout history, as can be seen from certain grammatical features and the presence of whistled sibilants, among other aspects, though it preserves a sizeable amount of native Vaniuan vocabulary. It is one standard variety of the pluricentric Jazaghan language, with Gushli being the other main variety.
Balak is notable among Vaniuan languages for its phonemic whistled sibilants and moderately complex stress rules, as well as its use of stative verbs as opposed to true adjectives, a feature shared by the Amaian languages, as well as other languages of the Kashisan subbranch such as Rasha and Western Kaatian. Another notable feature specific to Balak is its qumta vowel system, wherein some words have an alternate stem with an additional (lexically determined) word-final vowel or other alteration, which appears in some forms of a word but not others. Balak has also re-innovated a system of split-ergativity distinct from that of Proto-Vaniuan, which was lost in Eastern Vaniuan languages.
