[edit] [top]Introduction

Manean culture is complex and deeply rooted in the nation's history. It is built on a solid Ngerupic foundation, a mix of Mañic (primarily), Ounyu, and Kwangic. Its has also been impacted in no small part by it colonization by and control from outside powers. With the establishment of Modern Thought in Manea, the lines between traditional culture and religion and modern ideas and politics has been significantly blurred to the point where one cannot mention one without mentioning the other. Thus, it is best to describe Manea through the changes it has faced throughout history and how those changes have shaped its people and continues to shape them to this day.

[edit] [top]Pre-Ngerupic Era (until c. 2000 BCE)

Not much is known about the pre-Ngerupic people (PNPs) who inhabited the islands because they left no written records and have become totally assimilated in the the Ngerupic ethnic groups. However, historians have been able to deduce a good many aspects of their culture, religion, and daily life.

The PNPs lived primarily along the coasts of the islands, rarely venturing to the center. This lived an agrarian lifestyle, cultivating and harvesting many native crops such as cassava, sweet potato, and coconut, among others. The surrounding seas were also a predominant source of food, providing many different species of fish, crab, and other shellfish.

They spoke an unknown language of an unknown family. This language does not have any modern defendants, but has loaned some culture-specific words which can be seen in the modern languages of Manea today.

PNP society was loosely organized into villages which were governed by a village leaders. There were distinct roles for men and women. Focused on tasks like fishing, hunting, and home construction. Women took on a more domestic role, looking after children and elderly, preparing meals, and growing/gathering a variety of plants.

The religion of the PNPs was likely an animistic religion in which all things (people, animals, plants, objects, etc.) were believed to have a spirit. They distinguished between many different types of spirits: human, kinetic, static, bound, free, benevolent, and malicious. At the most basic level, a spirit could be human (and therefore the most animate, important, and powerful), kinetic (anything that was perceived to move on its own accord; excluded humans), and static (immobile). Spirts could also be bound or free. A bound spirit was one that was dependent on a body to support it. They could not transfer between bodies. Human spirits were considered bound, but when a person passed away their spirit could be freed through cremation. A free spirit was one who could exist without a body and could move between bodies. These were often considered the origin of disease. All spirits had the ability to influence the environment, though this ability depended on their spiritual energy. The spiritual energy was determined by the animacy with humans having the most, kinetic next, and static least. Spiritual energy could be influenced by the action of other spirits. For example, the spirit of the sun gave spiritual energy to plants during the day, supporting their growth. This would be an example of the sun acting as a benevolent spirit. Or, it could take the plants' energy in a scorching drought (malicious spiritual activity). Spirits were not exclusively benevolent or malicious.
