Prologue
I never knew my father. He died when I was a baby. But my mother talked about him. She said he was a strong and clever judge. While I grew up, I always thought of him as a great man--wise, kind, and loyal. A man I could be proud of, that he was my father.

And then...

When I was 46[1], my life was great. I was almost an adult. I was doing good in school. I had friends, lots of them.

And one day, it began...

Part One
I was walking down the street, toward the library.[2]

"Iwi!" called Arai, a friend of mine.

I stopped and turned toward her. "Hey, Arai," I said. "What's the matter?"

"No, no problem." She started walking again next to me. "But did you hear about the judge?"

"No, what judge?"

"Judge Ranet," she said. "Of Eastern Elten. They say he killed a man."

"What! Why?"

"I don't know. But... your father was a judge, right? Did he ever tell you about Ranet?" Her voice turned conspiratorial.

I stopped and glared at her. "He died when I was a baby, you know that very well." I liked Arai, but sometimes...

"Okay, okay," she said cajolingly. "But your mother, perhaps...?"

I rolled my eyes.[3] "No, I don't know anything about Judge Ranet. Why are we talking about this? And why do you think my father has anything to do with him, anyway?"

"Oy!" She wrinkled her nose. "I just wanted to find out if you knew anything..."

"You're always doing this," I complained. "Always asking about gossip."

"Come on, I'm just asking... you usually do know some." She sighed. "Okay, I'm sorry, Iwi. I'll shut up." She looked at the papers under my arm. "Are you going to the library? To study? Me too!"

I had been going to go, but... Arai's interrogation was exhausting, and I didn't think it was ending. "Umm... no," I said, smiling a little. "Just--going home."

She looked disappointed. "Okay... well... when you hear something, let me know, okay?"

"What do you mean 'when'?!"

"Hahaha... just suggesting? Goodbye--see you later--goodbye!" And with that, she stepped into the crowd and was gone.

Part Two
I kept walking home, still thinking about what Arai had said. I didn't know Ranet, but she was right about me hearing things. My mother may not have been a judge, but she was still friends with many judges who had known my father. And yes, that meant I knew a little gossip. Or a lot of gossip. But not about Ranet.

In truth, I didn't even know the name "Ranet". And the more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. I knew many judges, so Ranet must have been very quiet--not a politician. Strange, for a judge. And now this so-quiet man murdered somebody? Crazy. Maybe I should ask my mother about him...

I rolled my eyes again. It wasn't my business. I was just going to go home and forget about it.

When I arrived home, the house was all quiet. I looked around. "Mom?" I said.

I had come in the kitchen door because my mother usually was there in the afternoon. But not today. "Mom?" I called again. Maybe she went to the store, I thought, and went through toward my bedroom.

The house wasn't very big, but it was enough for our family branch. The main family house was nearby, but many years ago, my mother and father had moved out because there wasn't enough space.[4] So just two bedrooms, a living room, a separate dining room, and my mother's study--and of course the kitchen and bathroom.

When I entered the living room, I heard two voices--a man's and a woman's. I paused, listening for a moment, wondering who was talking.

"The situation is becoming messy," a man said. I didn't recognize his voice. "What was Ranet thinking? He messed up, he messed up badly."

"I agree," said the woman, but when I listened closely, I realized she wasn't my mother. "He's made himself a risk."

There was a brief pause. This wasn't for me--I didn't know these people, but I shouldn't have been eavesdropping on their conversation. But they'd mentioned Ranet, and I couldn't deny it interested me.

"Well," said the man. "We will fix the situation."

"Yes," she said immediately. "You should call Three Horns."

"I will," he said.

A chair scraped along the floor and I realized that they were getting up. And I was still here, in the living room, like a boulder! I quickly went back toward the kitchen, like I was only just entering.

"Oh!" I said, when the door of the study opened. I made my face look surprised. "Who are you?"

The man and woman stood still and stared at me. She was very short, almost as short as I was, even though she was an adult.[5] "Um..." she said, with a nervous smile. "My name is Lirn... certainly, you are Iwi."

"We are here to meet with your mother," the man said quickly. "I'm Tenal."

We waited very awkwardly, staring at each other. "So!" I said. "I think she isn't here, not yet..." I looked back at the kitchen. "Do you want water? I know we have bread and cheese too..."

"No, no," Lirn said, still smiling. "We'll just wait for her. I mean--if that's fine..."

"It's okay! It's fine." I tried to think of how to find out information about Ranet, but nothing came to mind. "Please! I won't bother you. Sit here, in the living room. Our home is yours."

While I was still talking, the kitchen door began to open and my mother entered. Like all of us, she also looked surprised. "Iwi!" she said brightly. "I didn't realize you were coming home so early!"

"I'm beginning to realize that," I said, moving my papers to my other elbow. "I'm going to my room." I went through to my room. I closed the door and walked loudly to set my papers on my desk. Then I tiptoed to the door, pulled in my amati[6], and leaned close to listen.

The voices were muffled, but I could hear my mother. "Why are you here?" she snapped. I couldn't understand what Lirn said, but Tenal interrupted.

"There is a problem," he said. "We are handling Ranet. But I heard from a... friend of mine that maybe--maybe--the key--well..."

"Spit it out," my mother said.

"It... might... have been stolen. But only maybe."

"Frosa?!" my mother yelled. She dropped her voice immediately, and I couldn't hear for some time. I could recognize the tone of voice, though. It was not pleasant for Lirn and Tenal. Then, I heard her say, "Not a problem. Not a problem! Everything's fine. Here's the thing--I will look into this. I'll go now." She sighed deeply. "And you two will make sure you handle the Ranet situation."

"Yes, Kinas," Tenal said.

"Yes," Lirn echoed.

I heard footsteps and then, someone closing the door. Then all was quiet.

[edit] [top]Footnotes

[1] Iwi is a dalar, and dalar age more slowly than humans. The age of adulthood--roughly equivalent to human 18--is 48, so Iwi is the equivalent of about 17 at this time.

[2] Tirina storytelling tends to be written in present tense, but for the sake of easy reading, the English translation is in past tense (which is more common for English fiction writing).

[3] The Tirina expression here literally means "to pray to the sky".

[4] The Sanmra are organized in large extended families/clans that, if they're rich enough, almost all live together in a single very large property. It's somewhat unusual that Iwi's immediate family (her father and mother) moved out in the first place, and it's also unusual that she and her mother didn't move back in after her father died. Could indicate some family issues here...

[5] Dalar are socially considered adults at 48 and start hitting puberty by, like, late 30s, but don't actually reach their full height for another few decades.

[6] "Amati" is a sort of magic telekinesis telepathy something-or-other that dalar can manipulate. Through it, they can sense one another, so Iwi is drawing hers in so the others can't tell she's listening at the door.
