Adjectival comparisons, which tend to require the conjunction "nu" after the conjugated adjective, vary slightly when used in formal settings.
When speaking or writing on formal grounds, nu is avoided and the comparison formation as a whole changes slightly while also taking into consideration the second object of the comparison.
COMPComparative (comparison) e.g. 'better' + nu + V | -ål | COMPComparative (comparison) e.g. 'better' + nu + C | -ålå |
---|---|---|---|
NCOMPNegative comparative (comparison) less than + nu + V | -år | COMPComparative (comparison) e.g. 'better' + nu + C | -årå |
When augmentative comparisons are made formally, the adjective's ending is altered to -ål if the next entity object to the comparison begins with a vowel, or to -ålå if it begins with a consonant. The same thing takes place with degradative comparisons with -år and -åra, respectively.
