Nominal cases has completely disappeared in Town Speech/Urban Basanawa, and Town Speech/Urban Basanawa has two ways to form possessions: using the preposition ふぉん(Romanization: von, pronunciation: /fɔn/) and use a structure similar to his genitive in English.

There are no possession classes in Urban Basanawa, both structures indicate the same meaning.

Preposition

The preposition ふぉん(Romanization: von, pronunciation: /fɔn/) is used to indicate both "of" and "from", using ふぉん is the more formal and conventional way to form possessions.

In this structure, possessor follows possessee. For example:

(Romanization: en kind von de man) - a child of the person
(Romanization: en kind von Jan) - a child of John
(Romanization: de kind von de man) - the child of the person
(Romanization: de kind von Jan) - the child of John
(Romanization: de kinder von de man) - the children of the person
(Romanization: de kinder von Jan) - the children of John
(Romanization: en haus von de man) - a house of the person
(Romanization: en haus von Jan) - ahouse of John
(Romanization: de haus von de man) - the house of the person
(Romanization: de haus von Jan) - the house of John
(Romanization: de hauses von de man) - the houses of the person
(Romanization: de hauses von Jan) - the houses of John

"His" Genitive

Besides using the preposition ふぉん, it is also not uncommon to use /sə/, a reduced version of the 3rd singular possessive pronoun 彼い(Romanization: sy, IPA /saɪ/) to form possession, which is similar to the "his genitive" construction in English. In this construction, the possessor precedes the possessee; besides, when this construction is used, the possessive pronoun is invariant, it does not change according to the number of either the possessor or the possessee. The possessee in this construction does not receive articles and is always seen as definite.

In the "his" genitive construction, the reduced possessive pronoun /sə/ is written as 之(And it is romanized as se), and occasionally people write it as の under the influence of Japanese. Writting the possessive pronoun as の in the "his" genitive is proscribed.

Unlike other Germanic languages but like Afrikaans, "his" genitive is acceptable and standard in Urban Basanawa; also, the construction of "his" genitive is more common in colloquial speech, although it is used in written works as well, even very formal ones.

For example:

(Romanization: de man se kind) - the child of the person
(Romanization: Jan se kind) - the child of John
(Romanization: de man se kinder) - the children of the person
(Romanization: Jan se kinder) - the children of John
(Romanization: de man se haus) - the house of the person
(Romanization: Jan se haus) - the house of John
(Romanization: de man se hauses) - the houses of the person
(Romanization: Jan se hauses) - the houses of John
