Stress and emphasis in Stellar Langua is quite complicated, using a hierarchy, various techniques, and logic to help in giving added meaning to a word or clause.
In word stresses, certain vowels have different relative stresses to guide the reader/listener in the differentiation and oration of words. In general, the syllable stress system puts different values to each vowel and groups them. A hierarchy is used to segregate all seven vowels of the language from the highest relative stress to the lowest relative stress:
a,o
i,u
e
ə,y
What does this mean?
The top two vowels, a & o, have the highest relative stress. This means that when an a or an o is in a word, the aforementioned vowels will be the stress. This is also applied to the next groups; i and u have the second relative stress. If there is no vowel with a higher relative stress is in the word, these vowels now have the stress. This is applied with the e group and the əy group. Note that there is only a primary stress; stress is only an ON-OFF function.
Here are examples with conditions:
a. "hərebur" (conquer) is pronounced "hə-re-BUR". Since u has a higher R.S. than the other vowels, u is the stressed vowel.
b. "uəkyr" (division) is pronounced "uə-kyr". There is no other vowel with a higher R.S. than the two, and since the two have an equal R.S. no stress is applied.
c. For diphthongs, such as eu in "eudyr" (ear), the R.S. of the highest stressing vowel is taken as the R.S. of the entire diphthong. Therefore, "eudyr" is pronounced "EU-dyr"
d. " loskərpuʃdaʃ" (forgetfulness) is pronounced "LOS-kər-puʃ-DAʃ". When two non-consecutive vowel have the same R.S., both of them will be the stressed vowel.
Word stress is used for various reasons, such as word emphasis, sentence and idea clarification, and is employed in two primary ways: the word order, repitition, and the use of the emphasis affix. By putting the word/phrase at the very first end of the clause, a more subtle stress is given. This is in contrast to putting the emphasis affix at the end of the word/phrase (-io), which gives a loud stress to the word/phrase, and also to repeating the word/phrase, which even increases the volume still, and in turn, the emphasis. ✎ Edit Article ✖ Delete Article
