Option 2: From the roots This article will teach you how to use the roots system built into CWS that allows you to set which words are derived from which words. Note that this system does have some limitations. At present, you are not able to assign roots between languages - use the Etymology field for this instead. This feature is meant to be used for showing words that are made compounds, blends, calques, and portmanteaus of other words.

NOTE: This feature is used to show the relationship between one word, and any number of other existing words in your lexicon. As such, the words must exist in your lexicon in order for this to work.

[top]Step 1: Enabling roots/derivations

Firstly you need to enable this for each language that you want to use this for. To do this, you need to go to the dictionary settings page and set this to 'Yes' as shown below. Then push 'Save'.

You should now be able to see on all your word entries that there is no root/derivation information available. You can see this on the screenshot below. This is a prompt for you to add the information for display there.

You can either add this information one of two ways: define the roots from the derived word's page, or define derivations from each of the roots' word page. We'll cover here how to do both.

[top]Option 1: From the derivation

The first (and easiest method) is to add the roots from the page of the derivation. Find a word you want to do this to, and click the "edit roots and derivatives" and a bunch of buttons will show up. Circled below you can see the button we need for this method called 'Find/edit roots'. Click this.

Once clicked, you should get a pop up. This pop up allows you to search your lexicon for the words you want to add as roots of the present word. You can specify more than one by using a comma. In the example we're using, we're looking for two roots: dutia and voruš

Once you push "ok", a lightbox will appear with words that match, or closely match the words you entered to search for. Click all those that apply to the derived word. Entries that appear in bold are already linked to other words. This should help you keep track of which words you're using as roots if you have duplicate entries.

Once you push 'Save information', CWS will do a bit of thinking, redirect, and a success message should be shown. You can now see that the roots of this word have been added, and will displaying on the page:

[top]Option 2: From the roots

The other method, which is slightly more labourious (but a way you still might prefer), is to specify the derivatives of the root from root's page. Circled below you can see the button we need for this method called 'Find/edit derivatives'. Click this.

Once clicked, you should get a pop up. This pop up allows you to search your lexicon for the words you want to add as derivative of the present word. You can specify more than one by using a comma. In the example we're using, we're looking for the derivative roots: duvoruš

Once you push "ok", you'll be redirected to a new page with words that match, or closely match the words you entered to search for. Click all those that apply to the root word, then click save. Once saved this will keep you on the same page. You can use the form at the bottom of the page to do subsequent searches should you wish to.

Once you've finished adding derivatives, you can go to your newly linked word, and you should see its root sitting there nicely. If you need to add more roots, you can do that using this method, or the first method discussed in this article.
